Summer of weddings 1

With nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, I thought I’d cheer things up by reflecting back on a couple of summer weddings I shot back in the warmer days of July and August.

I love the summer months, and this year had the privilege of being photographer at the weddings of Dan & Jenny and Laurence & Helen.

I find wedding assignments to be some of the most challenging as a photographer:

  • Having to work to a fast-moving agenda – no room for second chances or making mistakes
  • Requirement for a balance of formal and adhoc/unique shots – challenge to create that ‘signature look’ under pressure
  • On feet all day (can be 12+ hours), carrying lots of equipment
  • Having to move quickly between venues, negotiating public traffic
  • Lots of people wanting to stop and chat with you :)

But I also like the diverse range of environments and subjects a wedding brings, and the sense of satisfaction when all the preparation pays off and everything goes to plan.

Dan and Jenny

Dan and Jenny’s reception was on a farm, neighbouring the Bluebell Railway. Dan had arranged for a steam train to stop at a pre-agreed time, so they could have a photograph taken alongside. Trouble was, getting to the level-crossing involved rushing back from the church, changing into wellies, traveling by 4X4 to some woods, walking through the woods, traversing a rickety footbridge and clambering up to the tracks, all in a wedding dress / tails. Nevertheless we made it, and got a great selection of shots. I was lucky to have a friend of Dan and Jenny’s assisting me, meaning I could use off-camera lighting to overcome the harsh shadows of the midday sun.

Here’s a small selection of shots, taken from the finished set of 350…

Laurence and Helen

When I was first introduced to the intended schedule of Laurence and Helen’s wedding, I thought it would be impossible to fit everything in:

  • Bride and bridesmaids getting ready
  • Groom and best men at church
  • Wedding ceremony
  • Group shots
  • Traditional style fairground
  • Time with bride and groom
  • More group shots
  • Shakespearean play
  • Wedding breakfast
  • More traditional fairground games
  • Evening band
  • Fireworks

Well, the day was great – beautiful weather, amazing venue, extremely helpful best men, and generally one of the best organised weddings I’ve been privy to. I was kept on my toes as photographer, but the venue and various activities made for some brilliant photographic opportunities.

I was really chuffed with the results, all 692 of them. Here’re a few…
